CA Battery Fee Is Live on the Shopify App Store

CA Battery Fee is approved and listed on the Shopify App Store as of June 4. California requires retailers to collect a battery recycling fee on battery-containing products shipped to California addresses (Health and Safety Code § 25214.10.2). The app calculates it — 1.5% of the item price, capped at $15 per unit — and shows it to the customer at checkout as its own line.

How it works

You mark which products contain a battery by putting them in a Shopify collection. No SKU mapping, no tags. At checkout, the fee is added only when the shipping address is in California, and it lands on the order as a separate line item so your accounting sees a fee rather than product revenue. The customer-facing message is editable; the default cites the statute.

Two things to know before you install

It requires Shopify Plus. The checkout surface the app uses to read the shipping address and show the disclosure is only available on Plus; on other plans the block cannot be added, so no fee is applied.

Second, after installing, you add the block yourself in the checkout editor: Settings → Checkout → Customize, then Order summary → Add app block. Until that's done, no fee is applied. The dashboard walks through it, and the install guide has the exact steps.
