Mattress Recycling Fee Is Live on the Shopify App Store

Mattress Recycling Fee is approved and listed on the Shopify App Store as of September 1. Four states require a recycling fee on every mattress and foundation sold to their residents: California ($18), Connecticut ($16), Rhode Island ($22.50) and Oregon ($22.50). The amounts are per unit, a mattress and a foundation each count as one, and the fee follows the shipping destination, not where your store is.

How it works

You put every mattress and foundation you sell in a collection. The app applies the right amount per unit for the destination state and itemizes it at checkout under the label each state prescribes: "Recycling Fee" in California, Connecticut and Rhode Island, "Stewardship Assessment" in Oregon. Orders shipping anywhere else see no fee.

Consent, on the record

The fee is shown with its dollar amount at checkout, and the customer acknowledges it before a standard checkout can complete. That acknowledgment is enforced on Shopify's side rather than by a prompt in the browser, so it can't be skipped with a page refresh or switched off by a theme setting. The fee isn't optional under state law, so the acknowledgment is a disclosure rather than an opt-out — the same way sales tax is.

Express checkouts such as Apple Pay and Google Pay can skip checkout customizations entirely. For those, the app checks every order after the fact, recomputes the expected fee, and flags any under-collection in the dashboard, so nothing slips through unnoticed.

Reporting

Retailers remit unit counts to the Mattress Recycling Council monthly. The dashboard tallies qualifying units sold per state per month, the numbers the MRC fee report asks for. The app computes, collects and counts; remitting stays with you.

Before you install

Shopify Plus is required for the checkout disclosure. After installing, add the block in the checkout editor and, if you sell into Oregon, create the second fee product that carries the Stewardship Assessment label. The install guide walks through both.
